What polyaspartic is
Polyaspartic is a type of polyurea: a two-part resin that cures by chemical reaction, fast, and does not yellow in ultraviolet light the way epoxy does. In a garage it shows up two ways — as the clear topcoat over an epoxy base, or as every coat in the system.
Why it suits New Orleans floors
It is less fussy about the weather
South Louisiana has a hot, humid climate, and humidity can matter twice for a coating: moisture in the slab, and condensation on a cool slab during application. Polyaspartic tolerates a wider range of temperatures during application than most epoxies, which makes summer scheduling easier. It does not remove the dew-point rule — no coating should go on a sweating slab.
It keeps its color
An open carport, a garage that lives with the door up, or a floor by a sunny window will slowly turn epoxy amber. A polyaspartic topcoat stays clear.
It gets the space back fast
For a family with one garage, or a shop that cannot close for a week, the shorter cure is often the whole reason to choose it.
Polyaspartic vs. epoxy, side by side
| Polyaspartic | Epoxy | |
|---|---|---|
| Back in service (vehicles) | 24 to 48 hours | three to seven days |
| Color in sunlight | Holds its color | Ambers over time |
| Working time for the crew | Minutes | Longer, more forgiving |
| Thickness per coat | Thinner | Builds thicker for less |
| Installed price per sq ft | $7–$12 | $6–$9 |
The longer version, with the hybrid build most garages end up with, is in epoxy vs. polyaspartic for New Orleans garages.
What an installation includes
- Moisture test and assessment. Moisture in a slab can make a floor coating fail after it goes down, which is why coating makers generally require a moisture test first.
- Diamond grinding. Same as any serious system — the bond is mechanical.
- Repairs. Cracks, spalls, and joints filled with products that cure on the same fast schedule.
- Primer. Often an epoxy or moisture-tolerant primer, even in an all-polyaspartic build.
- Color coat and flake. Applied in small batches because of the short working time.
- Clear topcoat. The coat that carries the UV stability and the wear.
When the last coat is down, the cure-time rule applies:
- Walk on it
- about 24 hours
- Park on an epoxy topcoat
- three to seven days
- Park on a polyaspartic topcoat
- 24 to 48 hours
What polyaspartic coatings cost
$7–$12 per square foot installed.
| Project | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Single-car garage | $2,000–$3,600 |
| Two-car garage | $3,200–$6,000 |
| Three-car or oversized | $5,500–$9,000 |
| Polyaspartic topcoat over an epoxy base | adds roughly $1–$3 / sq ft |
The material costs more and the short working time demands a practiced crew; the return is a faster cure and steadier color in sun.
Typical installed ranges for the Gulf South metro — planning numbers, not quotes and not our prices. NOLA Concrete Coatings does not price or perform work; the real number comes from the installer after a look at the slab.
When polyaspartic is the wrong choice
- The budget only covers one system and the slab needs thickness more than speed — epoxy builds it cheaper.
- The floor is a large, complex pour where a short working time raises the risk of lap marks.
- The installer has not done many. Short pot life punishes inexperience; ask how many they have done.
Ask for it in writing
A written quote worth comparing lists four things as separate lines: prep, repair, the coating system, and the finish.
- 1PrepThe method (diamond grinding or shot blasting), the moisture test, and any moisture-tolerant primer that test calls for.
- 2RepairCrack and spall repair, removal of an old coating or sealer, and whether that number is fixed or an allowance the crew settles once the floor is opened up.
- 3Coating systemThe chemistry, the number of coats, and the total mil thickness, not just a product name.
- 4FinishSolid color, flake, or metallic; the topcoat; and the return-to-service windows for foot traffic and for vehicles.
Polyaspartic questions
How much do polyaspartic coatings cost in New Orleans?
Usually $7 to $12 per square foot installed — about $3,200 to $6,000 for a two-car garage. A polyaspartic topcoat over an epoxy base adds roughly $1 to $3 per square foot to an epoxy system.
Why does it cost more than epoxy?
The resin costs more per gallon, and it sets so fast that a crew has to mix small batches and move quickly. You are paying for the faster return to service and the color that holds in sun.
Can I really park on it the next day?
Often within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the product, the temperature, and the installer's instructions. Foot traffic is about 24 hours.
Does polyaspartic still need the slab ground?
Yes. Fast cure does nothing for adhesion. The slab still gets ground, repaired, and moisture-tested, and a moisture-tolerant primer goes down first where the reading calls for one.
